Why proper storage matters for peptide research
Research peptides represent a significant investment — both in cost and in the time taken to design and execute your protocols. Improper storage that leads to degradation can invalidate weeks of work and require costly reordering.
Beyond cost, disorganised storage can introduce serious experimental errors. Mislabelled or mixed-up vials, compromised seals, or incorrect temperatures all affect results in ways that may not be immediately apparent.
The essentials of a well-organised peptide storage setup
Dedicated freezer or refrigerated space
Ideally, research peptides should have a dedicated section of a laboratory-grade freezer (−20°C for most compounds, −80°C for longer-term archiving of sensitive sequences). Avoid storing peptides in shared domestic freezers where temperature fluctuations from frequent opening are common.
Individual vial boxes with clear labelling
Commercially available cryogenic vial storage boxes with 50 or 100 positions allow systematic organisation. Each position should correspond to a logged entry in your compound inventory. Label every vial with:
- Peptide name / sequence
- Lot number or CoA reference
- Reconstitution date (if applicable)
- Concentration and total volume (if reconstituted)
- Researcher initials
Amber vials and parafilm sealing
Light-sensitive peptides (those containing tryptophan, tyrosine, or methionine residues) should be stored in amber glass vials. After opening, re-seal the rubber septum with parafilm to prevent contamination and reduce oxidative exposure.
Dedicated travel cases for transport
If your research requires transport between labs or facilities, invest in a small insulated case with gel ice packs rated for 2–8°C or −20°C as required. Never transport reconstituted peptides unprotected, particularly in warmer months.
Inventory management
A simple spreadsheet log — or a dedicated laboratory information management system (LIMS) — that records all compounds, their storage locations, reconstitution dates, remaining volume, and usage history is essential for any lab handling multiple peptides simultaneously.
